What's in a Dream?

A dream is a combination of thoughts, images, and emotions. We are all expected to go through about two hours each at night. However, some dreamers think that their dreams are longer than this.

Theories about the purpose of dreams

In the last two centuries, a variety of dream theories have been formulated. These theories stem from the belief that dreams are manifestations of the brain, a psychological phenomenon that occurs during the REM phase of sleep.

In this time, the conscious part of the brain works to process memories. It results in a stream of memory stored that flows through the conscious portion of our brain. This is known as the continual activation theory.

Another theoryis called the"stimulus-response" model, recognises the dream as a type of wish-fulfillment. It is because dreams are needs that are not fulfilled in real life.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreams are a way to evolve. During the REM stage of sleep, the amygdala, which forms a portion within the fight-orflight area of your brain, activates similarly to the response to a threat to survival. This would have conferred the evolutionary benefit of prepping the body for the possibility of threatening situations.

The REM stage

Rapid eye movement, is the word of the day when it comes time to fall asleep. In this sleep-like state when the brain is at its most active, it makes the maximum use of its resources revising the characteristics it's never learned in the daytime. There are two types to dream material: latent and manifest. The latter category includes the actual content of dreams as well as the significance of it. It's usually a combination of memory fragments and symbolic events. In theory it is possible to translate the manifest content into the latent.

Freud's axiom
