What's a Dream?

Dreaming is the sequence of thoughts, images and feelings. Each one of us is believed to experience around 2 hours of dreams per night. However, some dreamers consider their dreams to be longer than this.

Theories of the role of dreams

In the last two centuries, many different dream theories have been formulated. These theories are based on the premise that dreams are the manifestations of the brain, which is a psychological phenomenon that occurs during the REM phase of sleep.

At this point, the unconscious brain is busy processing memories. The result is a stream from the memory stores which flow through the conscious part of the brain. This theory is often referred to the continual activation theory.

Another theory, referred to as the stimulus-response theory recognises the fact that dreams are a kind of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams express dreams that do not meet in real life.

The threat simulation theory suggests that dreams are a way to evolve. When you are in the REM stage of sleep an amygdala brain region, part from the fight-orflight portion of the brain, triggers similar in response to a survival threat. This would have offered the evolutionary benefit of preparing our bodies for potentially dangerous scenarios.

REM stage

REM or rapid eye movement, is an important factor in the realm of sleep. At night your brain makes the largest use of its capabilities by returning to the traits it's not yet learned during its active hours. One example is the sexual sexifier. This time of year, the Octavet is the most prominent that is why it is an ideal time to be with your significant other.

The REM area is also the location of many of the popular brainwaves from each day, and includes more esoteric ones. The most well-known occupants of REM comprise insomniacs and those with depression. An interesting study suggests that depression-related people tend to rest more often and for longer lengths of time. This may be due to a mixture different factors, the most evident being that they have an adolescent child.

Nightmares

A nightmarish experience can be a terrifying experience. They're usually associated with other unpleasant emotions. They can happen frequently or often. They may also be triggered by stress or trauma. In certain cases they could even be linked to medical conditions.

The first step in managing your nightmares is to be aware of the way they function. The subject of dreams can be influenced by a range of elements, including how the dreamer is feeling, the subject of a prior dream, news, and other events within the dreamer's world.

In some instances it is possible for a dreamer to actively modify the content of a dream, as well as the results. This can be done using a variety, but a common method is to practise a different version of the nightmare prior falling asleep.

Latent content

It is not clear if there are visible and intangible content in dreams is the subject of debate. Freud believed that these two are interrelated. Freud also compared dreams to an Iceberg. There is a part of the Iceberg that may be seen above water, and the part that is hidden under the surface.

Freud believed there were three components to the mind. Minds that are conscious constitute at the most prominent part of an iceberg, while the subconscious and latent mind are at the bottom. The best way to get a glimpse of the unconscious was through dreams.

There are two kinds for dreaming content: manifest and latent. This latter type includes the actual content of the dream as well as the meaning of it. The majority of the time, it's a combination of memory fragments along with a sequence of symbolic events. In theory there's a way to transform the actual content into the latent.

Freud's axiom

Sigmund Freud's dream axiom is that dreams are wishes fulfilled. This implies that everyone are neurotic. In addition, Freud stated that dreams are not real, and they're a way to substitute for reality.

The dream's content is divided into two parts of the dream - the actual and the latent. The manifest content is the real content, and the latent part is the hallucinatory part which is dream-like. The content that is manifest arises as a result of information processing. The latent contents are hidden desires , as well as various forms of hallucination.

Four mechanisms can keep the dream from being revealed. They are displacement, decryption, transference, and disguise. The first one is displacement. This occurs when a person in a dream is able to substitute elements of their dream for similar components in the dream-thoughts. It's due to the weakness of the sleeping brain.
